Volume 5 Issue 3
March 2007 Mars

Editorial
I am dedicating the March 2007 issue to the "woman".

First and foremost, since the feast of the Annunciation is celebrated on March 25, I wish to dedicate this issue to Mary, the mother of Jesus. If it were not for her "fiat", "behold the handmaid of the lord", her "yes" to what the Creator asked her to do, there would be no Christianity.

Mary's Yes was not the Yes of duty. It was not saying Yes to a task, to a burden, to a role. Her Yes was the Yes of woman being proposed to by the man that she loves...; her Yes was full of wonder, excitement, adventure. When we forget the humanity of her Yes and the humanity that came into the world because of her Yes, we forget the very nature of Christianity because we forget the nature of Jesus Christ who came into the wrold to attract and save the human heart. Everything good that has ever happenend in the Church and through the Church goes back to Mary's "Yes". Every beautiful piece of art and architecture, every act of charity and sacrifice in Jesus' name, every marriage sustained by Christ, every sacrament every received, all the friendships, the hospitals, the universities, all that is Christian traces itself back to this "Yes"."Magnificat" March 2006

I am also dedicating this issue to all the "women" authors who have written and continue to write articles for our magazine, giving of their talent and time freely and willingly. They are: Dolorès, Suzanne, Juliana, Louise-Andrée, Louise, Rita, Diane, Denise, Lucie, Claire, Judy, Françoise P., Dorothy, Belinda, Soeur Réjane, Helene, Leslie, Michelle, Mabel, Monique, Charleen, Françoise W., and the late Élise.
A huge Thank You from me to each of you.

I cannot forget that March 1 is my deceased mother's birthdate. Jeannette Bélanger Léveillée greatly influenced me in my spiritual life. She was a very dedicated wife and mother. Her education was simple, but very meaningful. She taught me how to love without reservation. This has guided me throughout my life. Happy birthday, Mom. Enjoy your reward with our Creator and our family in heaven.

March is also "Women's History" month.

Ceci m'a guidé pendant toute ma vie. Bon Anniversaire, Maman.

Juliana L'Heureux    Snowshoe Thompson: Legendary Skiing Mailman
In 1855 (John A.) Thompson saw an ad published in the Sacramento Union: 'People Lost to the World: "Uncle Sam Needs Carrier." There weren't any takers until Thompson, whose father had made him "snow-shoes" to ski to school as a child in Norway, decided to answer the call to duty. (He) carved himself a nice pair of oak skis .... nearly 10 feet long and weighed 25 lbs...

Louise Dubrule    Cat Tales
When you have a young, energetic kitten in the house in December, two words strike terror in your heart: ‘Christmas tree.’ We’ve just come through the holidays with TWO kittens, and you can imagine what an adventure this was. Our tree was climbed several times, many packages were explored, and every decoration was examined with great interest. Some of my best Christmas treasures remained packed away this year, just to be on the safe side.

Denise R. Larson    Survival in the New World
Senior citizens might grouse at the long line at the prescription counter, and young children might fidget while waiting to see a pediatrician, but all can count their lucky stars that they have modern medical care. In the early days of Quebec, young couples at the fur-trading post were eager to start families but knew that dangers would present themselves...

Norm Léveillée    The Equality of women in our Catholic Church
In the May 2006 issue of Késsinnimek - Roots - Racines, I wrote an article "C'est le mois de Marie... It's the month of Mary", a song that I learned in a Catholic elementary school which we sang during Mary's month of May. As Christians, we owe so much to Mary's "fiat", her yes to God, celebrated in our church liturgy on March 25, the feast of the Annunciation of Our Lord.
Then I gave a personal view of what I firmly believe should happen in the Catholic Church...

When God created woman, he was working late on the 6th day.
An angel came by and said: “Why spend so much time on that one?”
And the Lord answered: “Have you seen all the specifications I have to meet to shape her ?"

    Jim Carten    My Ancestor Jean-Baptiste
Before I begin, I know that I'm going to rub some folks the wrong way, so those who know of me should know that I do go by the roads less traveled, so now's the best time to flush the text.
As we read history, we are getting basically cold facts and occasionally an insight into an event or a personage, but personally I like to read between the lines and find a story...

Richard A. Payne    Sometimes Happiness is a Matter of "Hope"!
My dear old mother use to tell us children, "when are ship comes in, we'll buy this, replace that with a better one, do this and be able to avoid doing that", it kept us in an optimistic state of mind. If an outsider was to look was to look in our life with mom, they would no doubt conclude our ship really never did come in. We moved off and began lives of our own and made our way on our own, for better or worse...

Jacques Dunant    FAMILLE MONBRUN - SUITE
