At the age of 17, Flavie Ménard, daughter of Joseph Ménard and Charlotte Bertrand of Laprairie, married Moïse (Moses) Raymond. According to the 1880 census of Ohio,16 she was the mother of 9 children, however, only six were living in the home at the time of the census. It appears that all the surviving children emigrated to Columbus, Ohio., with their parents. The names of the children were, Joseph, Moses, Modeste, Marie, Frederick, Eduard and Jennie. Although there is no son named Thomas appearing on the 1861 census of Canada, there was a Thomas Raymond, born 1852, lower Canada, living next door to Moses and Flavie, on the 1880 census of Ohio. After Moses death, Flavie, moved in with her daughter, Jennie, and her husband David Gale. The Gales and the Raymonds had been friends for many years, both families being of French Canadian origin. In 1889, the families jointly opened and operated a saloon on Harbor Rd., in the neighborhood, and remained in the saloon business until at least 1899. Apparently after 1898, some of the Raymond family turned to brick making, perhaps investing in this new business. By 1897, Flavie was living alone on Bonham Ave. near 10th in Columbus, Ohio where in February 1902, she died. She is buried in the Raymond plot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, in Columbus, Ohio, opposite Moses, and with Frederick and Jennie. Her gravestone is shared with Moses but the inscription is in poor condition and difficult to read.(14)
On 4 Nov 1844 when Flavie was 17, she married Moïse Raymond(10), son of Bonaventure Raymond & Archange Lestage, in St. Edouard, Napierville, Québec, Canada.(10) Born on 30 Mar 1823 in Laprairie, Québec, Canada.(14) Moise died in Columbus, Ohio on 24 Sep 1889; he was 66.15 Buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.15 Naturalized on 8 Oct 1867 in Franklin County, Ohio.(17)
Moïse was the son of Bonaventure Raymond and Archange Lestage. Moïse Raymond, his wife Flavie, and their family, emigrated to the U.S. in about 1865, from the county of Napierville, province of Québec, Canada. In Canada, on the 1861 Census, Moïse is listed as a farmer. On the agricultural census, of 1861, he was farming about 75 acres, probably parish owned land. The prospects and land ownership and a new and more prosperous way of life free from old cultural conflicts, were strong motivating factors for emigration. There is evidence that Moïse may have had relatives, Victoria and Sophia, who emigrated to Columbus, Ohio about 1854. This may have been the determining factor in his emigration to Ohio. Moïse was naturalized in 1867, in Franklin County, Ohio, and his name Americanized to Moses.(18) When Moses arrived in Columbus, Ohio, he does not appear to work as a farmer for any length of time, if at all. In 1876, Moses and Flavie were living in Marion Township, Franklin Co., Ohio. In 1879, he bought property in Mifflin Township, Franklin County, from his son Joseph, although it seems he continued to live in Marion Township as he is still listed as living there in 1880. In 1880, Moses is listed in the Census as a laborer. Living in the same neighborhood were Jesse Baughman and family, including Catherine and Eva. On August 13, 1882, Catherine Baughman married Moses and Flavies son, Edward Raymond. In 1882, Moses purchased a lot in Marion Township from his son Joseph and in 1883, the City Directory lists his residence as Reed Ave. north of P.C. & St.L. RR. This location may be close to the old St. Marys of the Springs Catholic Girls School and Convent, now Ohio Dominican College. In the 1883 City directory, he is listed as a watchman. In 1887, he purchased a lot in Columbus on Trivett and Mt. Airey, from Joseph. The 1887 City Directory lists his residence on Harbor Rd. between Woodward and 5th Avenues, although this may have been the residence of Moses Jr. On September 24, 1889, Moses Raymond died. His death record has not been found, but several documents, such as the Catholic Record Society publications and Mt. Calvary Cemetery records for interment, clearly list his date of death. The inscriptions on his gravestone are still legible but deteriorating. (14)

Ninth Generation

41. Moses (Moïse) Raymond. Born in Feb 1846 in Québec, Canada.(19) Naturalized on 9 Oct 1868 in Ohio Probate Court, Franklin County. Occupation: Brick Maker.(19) Moses Raymond was born in Québec, Canada, date of death unknown, however he is believed to be buried in northern Michigan. Moses is listed as emigrating to the U.S. in 1861 and would have been 13 years old, however, census records in Québec, indicate his parents and siblings were living in Napierville, in the parish of St. Michel, in 1861. His year of birth is listed as 1848(19), however further investigation indicates he year of birth was 1846. Moses was the husband of Mary (Marie Anne) Hamelin, married in 1868(20). Moses was the father 14 children, 10 of whom were living at the time of the 1900 census; Adam, Mary (Me-Ma), Delia, Maude, Leo, David, Ely, Isaac, Mamie, and Homer. During the time of the 1880 Census, Moses and his family lived in Franklin County on Toronto St, and later, in 1900, lived on Schneider Lane . The 1880 and 1900 Census list Moses' occupation as "Brick Maker", that he could not read or write, but was able to speak English. The 1900 census lists his property on Schneider Lane, as being "Owned, Free and Clear". (16,21)
On 11 Feb 1868 when Moses (Moïse) was 22, he married Marie Anne Hamelin, in St. Michel, Napierville, Québec, Canada. Born in Oct 1849 in Québec, Canada.(21) In most U.S. records, her name is listed as "Mary". Alias/AKA: Various records in the U.S. and Québec, list Marie Anne's name as; Mary Arunah, Anne Marie Hamelin, Marie Anne Hamelin, Anne Hamelin, Mary Hamely, Mary Amley, Mary Aminah, Mary Eminel.
Mary (Marie Anne) Raymond is listed as the wife of Moses Raymond on the 1880 and 1900 U.S. Census for the state of Ohio. Dates of birth and death are unknown, however, the year of birth, 1849, is calculated from her age listed on the Census of 1880/1900. According to Census records, Mary came to the United States in 1861, around age 11, however marriage records from Québec, Canada, indicate she was still living in Québec in 1868, and that their marriage took place in Napierville, Québec. It appears that Moses returned to Québec to marry, and bring her back to Ohio. Birth records have been found for a few of their children, listing Marys maiden name with several different spellings. Mary Hamelin-Raymond, is said to have died at age 90+.
