l'éveillé

King Louis VI of France was named "l'éveillé" because he was the first European monarch to establish democracy in his royal court. He allowed his lords to vote on certain issues. Thus, he "awoke" or introduced his court, and the world, to the notion of democracy. The french verb "éveiller" means "to awaken".

Louis was born in 1081, the son of Philippe I. He reigned as King from 1108 to his death in 1137. He reestablished order in the royal domain, fought King Henry I of England and stopped the Germain Emperor Henry V from invading France. Suger was his principal minister.

Various spellings of the name are:
                  Léveillée, Léveillé, L'éveillé.

It is pronounced as if there is a "y" instead of the two "l's"; phonetically "liveayear".
In French pronunciation, two "l's" between two vowelles, of which the first is an "i", are pronounced like a "y".

The first person to use the name was most likely a soldier who played the trumpet or horn to "awaken" the other soldiers. The English word "reveille" comes from the French verb "éveiller" or "réveiller".

In the various genealogical dictionaries and repositories, there are variations and alternates to this name: Fourquain, Fourquin, Forcan.
