Notes: (from Marc André Guitard)

1. I also found a Drouin Collection baptismal record for Marie Anne Gagnier which shows that she was baptized on 18 April 1773, the daughter of Louis Gagnier and Marie Jeanne Cloutier in the Parish of St. Joseph de Beauce, Québec. Note that Zacharie Cloutier is recorded as the Grandfather of Marie Anne Gagnier . This confirms that Zacharie Cloutier was the father of Marie Jeanne Cloutier. Also the parents of Louis Gagnier are recorded as Marie Reine Bluteau and Pierre Gagnier and are noted as being present. This document clearly establishes the link between Louis Gagnier and his parents and also establishes the link between Marie Jeanne Cloutier and her father Zacharie Cloutier. See the attached Drouin Collection document Marie Anne Gagnier Baptisim record 18 April 1773 daughter of Louis Gagnier and Marie Jeanne Cloutier St Joseph de Beauce Québec.

2. Marguerite Gagnier's record of Baptism states that she is the daughter of Louis Gagnier and Marie Jeanne Cloutier and that she was Baptized on 23 December 1771 in the Parish of St. Joseph de Beauce, Québec. Note that this document further states her Godfather is her Grandfather Pierre Gagnier and her Godmother is Marie Madeleine Douqet the second spouse of our ancestor Zacharie Cloutier. This document confirms that her paternal Grandfather was indeed our ancestor Pierre GAGNÉ and that her maternal Grandfather was Zacharie Cloutier. This document clearly establishes the link between the name of GAGNIER recorded for this family in the Parish of St. Joseph de Beauce, Québec and GAGNÉ used for this family in the Parish of St. François de Beauce, Beauceville, Québec and the Parish of St. Joachim, Québec. The name of GAGNÉ and GAGNIER are pronounced the same in French and after the GAGNÉ family moved to the Parish of St. Joseph de Beauce, Québec their name was recorded in the offical Church records as GAGNIER. See the attached Drouin Collection document for Marguerite Gagnier Baptism record daughter of Louis Gagnier and Marie Jeanne Cloutier 23 December 1771 St François de Beauce Québec.

After examining the available documentation for the GAGNÉ branch of my family tree the official records indicate that the surname for this family was recorded as Gagnier in the Parish of St. Joseph de Beauce, Beauce, Québec and as GAGNÉ in the Parish of St. Joachim, Montmorency County, Québec and the Parish of St. François de Beauce, Beauceville, Québec. Note that the French pronunciation of the name GAGNÉ and GAGNIER is identical and it appears that the priests who registered the Baptism, Marriage and Burial records of this family between 1705 and 1888 used both spellings for the same sounding surname. (Marc André Guitard)

Note that the baptismal record of our ancestor Louis GAGNÉ who married Marie Madeleine Rancourt states that he was baptized as Louis Gagnier on 7 September 1777 the son of Louis Gagnier and Marie Jeanne Cloutier in the parish of St. Joseph de Beauce, Québec. Note that the surname is consistently recorded as GAGNIER in the Parish of St. Joseph de Beauce. See the attached Drouin Collection document for Louis Gagnier Baptism record 7 September 1777 son of Louis GAGNÉ and Marie Jeanne Cloutier St. Joseph de Beauce Québec.

Please note that the age stated for Flavien GAGNÉ at the time of death in his Burial record below appears to be greater than 80 years. Unfortunately, this part of the text is not readable. Assuming we have found the correct Baptismal record for my ancestor Flavien GAGNÉ he should have been age 80 at the time of death. Assuming the marriage date of his parents is correct (2 October 1803) and knowing that his older sister Thecle GAGNÉ was baptized on 23 September 1804 Flavien should be no older than 83 years at the time of his death. So it is possible that one or both of these records are not the records of our ancestor Flavien GAGNÉ. Also, the Recueil de généalogies des comtés de Beauce, Dorchester, Frontenac, 1625-1946 and the Drouin Collections Marriage record for Flavien GAGNÉ and Modeste Quirion clearly show that they were married on 2 October 1803 and that they were our ancestors.
