Marie Louise Boucher was born 15 Sep 1829, in Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu, Sainte-Hyacinthe, Québec, Canada,5 bapt. 23 Sep 1829, in Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu, Sainte-Hyacinthe, Québec, Canada,6 died 14 Apr 1919, in Four Corners, Fiskeville, Cranston, Rhode Island,7 buried 16 Apr 1919, in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Arctic, West Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island.7 Cause of death: Acute interstitial nephritis and arteriosclerosis. The witnesses on Maxime's baptismal record were Antoine Valois and Agathe Valaing. (27)
The Maxime Martin family family was living at St. Charles-sur-Richelieu at the time of the 1861 Canadian census. Maxime was described in the census report as a "journeyman" (day worker). In the 1875 Rhode Island census, Maxime's name is given as Michael (age 45), and the family was living in Coventry. Also listed are Louisa B. (age 44), Michael (son, age 22), Aulet (age 21), Mary (age 14), Joseph (age 15), Ida (age 11), and Louisa (age 7), all born in Canada. The census of 1900 reports that Maxime and Louise Martin emigrated in 1868. The 1920 census record of Maxime's children, Marguerite Ashey and Maxime Martin, indicates that they emigrated in 1869. Maxime and Louise Martin's son, Alexander, was naturalized on 28 December 1891, at which time he stated that he arrived in the United States on 3 May 1869. In addition to the listed children, there may have been another daughter, Mary (1869-1880). Louise Boucher Martin reportedly ran a boarding house in Providence after her husband's death.
In the 1880 census of the village of Harris, Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island, there is a Martha Martin, age 49. Living with her were her daughter, Ida, age 15; son, Joseph, age 19 (a machinist); daughter-in-law Aggie, age 20, and; granddaughter Mary, age 1. If this is the same family, then it would appear that Joseph Martin had been married previously, before marrying Maria Jean. She was living at 499 N. Main Street, Providence, in 1885. Her son, Maxime, lived tere as well. At the time of the 1900 Census, she was living at 376 Richmond Street, Providence, Rhode Island (Roll 1507, Book 1, Page 2a). She was still living at that address in 1907, as were Maxime Martin and David Plante, her son-in-law. At the time of the 1910 census, she was living on 276 Richmond Street, Providence. Living with her were son Maxim (age 56, widowed); son-in-law David Plante (age 47, widowed); her grandson David Plante, Jr. (age 24), and; her granddaughter Antoinette Plante (age 13). The census indicates that she emigrated in 1867. In the records of the Potvin Funeral Home, West Warwick, Rhode Island, her residence at the time of her death is given as Fiskeville.

vii. Joseph Martin, born 2 Nov 1832, in Saint-Michel-d'Yamaska, Québec, Canada, bapt. 3 Nov 1832, in Saint-Michel-d'Yamaska, Québec, Canada,2 died before 1922.8 He married Julia Francoeur. Julia Francoeur was born 12 Aug 1834, in Canada,8 died 2 Oct 1922, in Arctic, West Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island,8 buried 4 Oct 1922, in St. Mary Cemetery, West Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island.8 The Joseph Martin family was living in Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island, at the time of the 1880 census. Julie Francoeur Martin was living in Arctic, Rhode Island, at the time of her death. On the marriage record of her daughter, Philomine, her name is given as Julie Francoias. (27)

viii. Charles Dosithée Martin, born 4 May 1835, bapt. 4 May 1835, in Saint-Michel-d'Yamaska, Québec, Canada,2 died 19 Aug 1914, in Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts,9 buried 21 Aug 1914, in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts.9 He married Christine Nadeau 1852. Christine Nadeau was born 1823, in Canada,10 died 15 Nov 1920, in Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts,9 buried 17 Nov 1920, in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts.9 Charles and Christine Martin were living in Biddeford, York County, Maine, at the time of the 1870 census. Living with the family was Margaret Nadeau (age 90), who could have been Christina Martin's mother or grandmother. The family was living at Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts, at the time of the 1910 census. Living with them were their granddaughters, Ida (age 21) and Eva Martin (age 12). The census records that the girls were born in Massachusetts, as was their mother, and that their father was born in Maine. According to the 1900 census, Charles and Christine both emigrated in 1848. If this is correct, then this must not be the same Charles who was a son of Joseph Martin and Marguerite Parenteau.

Also nearby was the family of Joseph Lafleur and Philomene Martin, daughter of Joseph Martin and Marie Pétrin. At the time of the 1900 census, the Onésime Martin family was living at Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island. His occupation was day laborer, and the census indicates that they emigrated from Canada in 1894. However, the 1900 census also indicates that several children born prior to 1894 were born in Rhode Island. The marriage record found in the records of St. John the Baptist Church, West Warwick, Rhode Island, indicate that the parents listed here may be incorrect. Onésime's parents are given in that record as Cleophas and Elizabeth. This marriage record also states that the bride's name was Celina.

Data submitted by Greg Martin July 2012:

(26) Hercule was the first cousin of my great-grandfather, Joseph Arthur Martin.
(27) Joseph's family did live in Harris at one time, but that was long before your time. Our close relatives who lived there in slightly more recent times include Hercule's brother Maxime Martin.
(28) This link should take you to a list of all known relatives who lived in Harris at one time or another: Harris Village, Coventry RI.
(29) My great-grandfather left the Providence area sometime around 1890 and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. My grandfather Alexander lived in several places in Ohio, and also in Erie, Pennsylvania, for a time, before finally settling in Dayton, Ohio. I was born in Dayton and live now in Kettering, a Dayton suburb.
